caveat: we live in brooklyn, which isn't the same as living in manhattan. it's a bit slower-paced here. the people are more patient. and it's hipster capital, which means we have awesome food!
siri and i have been in new york for a little over three weeks now. surprisingly, siri has not mentioned missing san francisco, probably in large part due to the fact that we live literally one block away from an awesome playground. and, it helps that our neighborhood has already been christened by hipsters, so we have access to fabulous food and treats. aside from the frozen yogurt joint mentioned in a previous post, we've also discovered people's pops -- yummy popsicles perfect for hot summer days. siri is quickly becoming a new yorker, while her parents still hold onto memories of california. i won't deny it: we're homesick for california, for san francisco, for irvine. we were familiar with those places, and they're closer to our families. but, new york, and especially brooklyn, has a lot to offer. we love that we are living in a place ripe with history, not recent history, but founding-of-the-country-ellis-island-statue-of-liberty history. we are also excited to be so close to many new england states and can't wait to start exploring.
we've been rather busy, hence the lack of updates lately. jeff took the ny bar exam, nana came to visit/help out for two weeks, jeff started work, i have been prepping my fall classes and we're frantically searching for an after-school sitter. siri's school gets out at 3pm, and i teach until 3:30 on mondays and wednesdays. i've interviewed at least six people, but reached out to roughly 35 over the course of two weeks. it's a very frustrating process as some people are perfect candidates and we trust them, but they have some sort of schedule conflict and can't pick up siri one of the days, or they don't have the experience we're looking for, or they just seem awkward when we meet them in person. i have three more interviews tomorrow, and probably a couple more after that, but we really do hope we meet "ms. right" to take care of our precious. luckily, we found a temporary sitter (who is currently looking for full-time work in her trained field) who is great with siri. today was her first day and siri had a blast hanging out with her...mainly because they hung out at the playground for three hours. mommy rarely lets her stay for more than one.
our place is unpacked for the most part. there are still straggling boxes waiting to be unpacked, but since we got rid of storage furniture, we're not quite sure where to unpack some things. we've acquired some furniture: a bookcase, a table, a couple of chairs, a dresser, but could use more. i don't want to rush this process, and so don't mind the few boxes strewn around our place. however, i feel unsettled, and welcome the day when the last box is unpacked and we can begin placing wall decor. i anticipate feeling more settled at that point.
